The construction of stones bonded together with mortar is termed as stone masonry where the stones are available in an abundance in nature.  Masons are experts on cutting and dressing stones to the proper shape.   Stone masonry provides economical material for the construction of various building components such as walls, columns, footings, arches, lintels, and beams.

Hudson County Stone Masonry

The stones to be used for stone masonry should be hard, tough and durable.  The pressure acting on stones should be vertical.  The stones should be perfectly dressed as per the requirements.   The heads and bond stones should not be of a dumbbell shape.  In order to obtain uniform distribution of load, under the ends of girders, and roof trusses.  Large flat stones should be used. Hudson County stone masonry works with homeowners, builders, architects on various building components.

  • Building foundations, walls, piers, pillars, and architectural works
  • Lintels, beams, arches, or domes
  • Roofs and roof coverings
  • Cladding works
  • Dams, light houses, monumental structures
  • Paving jobs
  • Railway, ballast, black boards and electrical switch

The mortar to be used should be good quality and in the specified faces.  The construction work of stone masonry should be raised uniformly.  The plumb bob should be used to check the verticality of erected wall.  The stone masonry section should always be designed to take compression and not the tensile stresses. The masonry work should be properly cured after the completion of work, for a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

Bridges

There are fewer stone masonry bridges on the 2013 NBI than timber bridges, with less than 1700 reported making up less than 0.3% of inventory.  The majority of these were built before 1940 with less than ten new masonry bridges constructed annually in every year after 1950.  As with timber bridges, the NBI does not count structures with an opening of less than 20 ft., nor does it count the number of span bridges with a stone substructure element.

Where stone has been used, it has almost always been locally sourced.  The mechanical and chemical properties vary with the type available from the local geology.  The compressive strength of the rock used is almost always equal to or greater than concrete. The mortar used will typically be a type of Portland cement and will be weaker than the rock.

Stone masonry deteriorates by weathering (breaking into small particles), spalling (small sections of rock popping out), or splitting (separations occurring either at seams in the rock or along mortar joints).  Possible causes include chemical reactions, thermal expansion and contraction, freeze-thaw, plant growth in the seams, and movement of the soil mass behind stone masonry walls.

Decorative bridges

Decorative bridge in the garden is a multifunctional design, which may alter the landscape painting perfection, beautify the landscape.  Experts have prepared a special review of the species of ornamental bridges and how to make their own hands.  It is not necessarily a bridge must be laid across the pond: among the architectural techniques there are the so-called dry creek, which can simulate for using large stones and pebbles.  Modern garden bridges refer to small architectural forms along with gazebos, benches and pergolas.

The bridge can act as a crossing over a ditch or ravine, if next to your cottage there is a pond, you can make a panoramic island.  It is important that the garden was not the design of the bridge leading to nowhere and fit into the overall design concept of the garden. The material and shape of the bridge should be similar to the style and architecture of your home or small architectural forms.

Styles

Let’s talk about the styles of gardens.  If your site is landscaped and made as close as possible to the natural style bridge can be installed in a narrow place pond or swamp, visually dividing it into unequal parts.  In regular gardens make clear the bridge in the middle of the reservoir, to emphasize the linear perspective is to install on the opposite bank of a beautiful conversation.  In Japanese gardens, bridges are more decorative than practical, as a rule, their curved shape, they are made from natural materials.  The garden in the style of country music can be supplemented by a wooden bridge with a deliberately rough and wide handrail balusters.  The avant-garde garden and the bridge must be asymmetrical.

What role can play a decorative bridge in the area?

  • Observation deck.  From the high bridge nice treat their possessions and surroundings (such structure must be located on a hill).
  • In this case, the bridge is carried out in the same style with pergolas, gazebos or garden path.
  • Bright accent. If you have a pond, the elegant bridge can be a major part, chaining themselves to the views. If a large body of water, the bridge can become a mooring for a boat, or a place for fishing.
  • Children will be delighted very presence of the original suspension bridge.

This is a very durable and beautiful designs that are appropriate in almost any garden style.  It is worth remembering that natural stone is very hard to work with them need special tools and skills.  The most common structure erected from limestone, dolomite, granite, sandstone, natural boulders of marble.  This bridge is very organically combined with paths of gravel, stone fences and blind area.  You can give preference to lighter color, try artificial stone.
